USTs and LUSTs

CAS & Associates, LLC (CAS), located in Boise Idaho, also deals in Underground Storage Tanks (USTs). When a UST is suspected of a release it is considered an area of concern and is referred to as a Leaking Underground Storage Tank (LUST). When it is closed, removed, or when it is temporarily taken out of service an investigation may be required.

A UST/LUST Assessment Should Provide the Following:

  • A full description of the UST/LUST system,

  • Materials of construction of the UST/LUST and associated piping,

  • Depth to the bottom of the UST/LUST,

  • Any associated leak detection methods and recordings,

  • Age of the UST/LUST system,

  • Appropriate depth to groundwater,

  • Types of fluids stored in the UST/LUST over the life of the tank,

  • The purpose of replacement or repair to the UST/LUST system,

  • Reported discharges from the system, and

  • Cause and source of any release in accordance with applicable federal and state regulations.

Underground storage tank removal involves numerous tasks, from initial phases of planning and permitting, to the actual fieldwork of excavation, and the final stages of backfilling and compaction testing. Permit agency oversight is mandatory for UST/LUST removal. Furthermore, the process generates hazardous waste and debris, which need legal transportation and treatment. Finally, backfilling, compaction, and reporting must occur in order to achieve case closure.
